Skyrim Stamina Combat Overhaul Mod

This is a mod for Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim developed using their Elder Scrolls Creation Kit in combination with the Skyrim Script Extender, using the Creation Kit's proprietary scripting language provided.

This mod is designed to overhaul the way stamina works in Skyrim with the intent of creating a more engaging and dynamic combat experience. Design principles from the popular Dark Souls franchises were a source of inspiration for these changes, though they needed to be significantly modified to work in the context of Skyrim.

The biggest overarching theme is consequences to actions. In Dark Souls each attack costs stamina, and running out of stamina can leave your character vulnerable and since in Dark Souls players don't have much health, this can easily lead to death. By comparison, in Skyrim weapon attacks don't consume stamina unless they are charged "power attacks," which means players can attack by button mashing with minimal downside. In an effort to make Skyrim's combat more engaging, the consequences inspired by Dark Souls's combat system were implemented. This isn't a one-to-one translation, however. Death is intended to be a common occurence in Dark Souls, and something that it is easy to recover from, where in Skyrim death is an end to the story, where players need to restart from an earlier save point to continue. As a result, the consequnces of running out of stamina had to be lessened.

To achieve this, new mechanics were added. Weapons now cost stamina to swing, with heavier weapons costing proportionately more stamina per swing. If a character runs out of stamina and swings their weapon they have a high chance to drop it, meaning they have to recover and re-equip their weapon to continue fighting with it. Additionally, characters attempting to spring and running out of stamina will fall on the ground and be vulnerable to attack. These are all downsides, but they aren't as catastrophic as Dark Soul's, and can be mitigated with planning and active engagement with combat. Since these changes are applied to the player and npcs, it also gives players new avenues to attack npcs, using spells and poisons to drain their stamina and disarm them, and creates some dynamic combat where npcs that drop their weapon will often equip a different one they had in their inventory, which can change the nature of the fight.
